Psalm 107 Worksheet

Psalm 107 is the first Psalm of ‘Book 5’ of the Psalms. The 5 sections of the Psalms are each kind of like “greatest hits” collections of songs – think in terms of the Songs of Israel, Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The beginning Psalm of each ‘volume’ kind of sets a _____________________ for the Psalms included in that section, and each ‘volume’ ends with a benediction.

Book 5 of the Psalms has many Psalms of thanks and _____________________ to God, and Psalm 107 kick it off in a great way!

The NKJV heading is good – “Thanksgiving to the LORD For His Great Works of Deliverance.”

As I read Psalm 107, look for what we see in modern songs – verse, chorus. There are 4 such verses and chorus repetitions before the conclusion.

According to Psalm 107:1, what two things are we to constantly give the LORD thanks for?

His _______________________ and His mercy!

The Hebrew word for good in Psalm 107:1 is Tob (H2896a), found 368 times in the Old Testament. It is translated, good, pleasant, agreeable!

One of the keys to growing in our faith is to start with a rock solid understanding that God is good, and so are His commands, and thus anything He commands us to do will ultimately _____________________ us.

The Hebrew word for mercy is the word Hesed (H2617a), found 240 times in the Old Testament. Often translated mercy or lovingkindness in the NKJV and as steadfast love by the ESV, it conveys the idea of God’s __________________________ love expressed as He extends grace to humble sinners. The word occurs in verses 1, 8, 15, 21, 31, and 43.

The first 3 verses reveal the __________________ of God’s redemption – people from all over the world – East and West and North and South covers the world!

Verses 4-32 show the testimonies of 4 different kinds of people (those who have wandered, those who sat in darkness, those who were fools, and those looking for adventure across the seas). In each case it describes the ______________________ situation they found themselves in, them crying out to the LORD and being delivered, and then a call for them to properly thanks and praise the LORD!

Fools, because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, were afflicted. Their soul abhorred all manner of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them out of all their distresses. He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. Oh that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare His works with rejoicing.                                                        -Psalm 107:17-22

Whether your problem is wandering, walking in darkness, foolish thoughts and behaviors, or travelling the world seeking meaning without God, when you cry out to God and He saves you, be sure and declare your ________________________ loudly and often!

Verses 33-43 end the Psalm with a callback to the two ways presented in Psalm __________. Those who choose the godly path will be blessed, while those who continue in sinful ways will experience the built in consequences of sin.

For those who continue in sinful ways…

He turns rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground.                                                -Psalm 107:33

For those who turn to God and walk in His ways…

He turns a wilderness into pools of water, and dry land into watersprings.                           -Psalm 107:35

The last verse of the psalm beautifully _______________________ what happens when “the redeemed of the LORD say so,” when they proclaim God’s goodness and grace.

The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.                                  -Psalm 107:42-43 (ESV)
